Positive and humane dog training is just one piece of the puzzle of solving dog behavior issues. Puppy school, "obedience" classes and dog sports are wonderful opportunities for you and your dog to learn useful skills, but they don't always create a dog you can live with. Having a peaceful canine is a two way street. Some of the trickiest behavior problems are not training issues, but emotional, environmental and lifestyle conflicts. A one on one, customized approach, will help you reach your goals with lasting results.
No matter how much research you did before you brought your puppy home or how spontaneously your choice was to save your rescue pup - you had an idea about the life you wanted to have with your dog. Are things not measuring? Cafe dog? Agility champion? Outdoor companion? Great with kids? Therapy dog? Emotional support dog? Couch potato?Look at the dog in front of you. Accepting where you are is the first step in seeing where you are going. Understanding the root cause of your struggles is the best way to come up with an effective plan.
Our training relationship starts with an in depth 90 minute private 1:1 consultation to understand who your dog is, the challenges you are experiencing, the type of relationship you have, environmental factors that can be managed and specific behaviors that can be trained or treated to improve your life together. We focus on identifying the root cause of behavior challenges, rather than covering up the symptoms, which are often the difficult behaviors you are experiencing, like barking, lunging, reactivity and aggression.
Sometimes your dog's natural doggy needs, when left unfulfilled (ie, chewing, digging, destructive activities) can makes our lives and relationship with out dog a real challenge.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dog training. Each dog is a unique individual. Your dog's breed, age, sex, past experiences, learning and current environment and relationship are all what makes your dog who he is. Identifying your dog's needs and ways to fulfill those needs, from a trauma informed perspective, is a first step to creating a happy life with your dog.
For basic manners and skills (sit, down, stay, come, loose leash walking) we can privately teach you and your dog how to accomplish these goals in person or online. Or if you are in the Corvallis area, we can privately train your dog in your home.
For behavioral challenges that are rooted in emotional issues, like fear and anxiety, it is best that you work directly with your dog with the support of a certified trainer. Addressing leash reactivity, excessive barking, resource guarding and stranger danger all rely on building a secure and trusting relationship that only you can establish with your dog.
After the initial consultation you will receive a simple to implement custom training plan with management tools and techniques that you can immediately put into place to alleviate some of the challenges you and your dog are experiencing. A training schedule with detailed instructions will be provided to work on the skills you learned in the initial session, along with future training goals to work toward. You and your dog will be supported every step of the way.
Follow-up training can be scheduled to update your progress, brush up on learned skills, work on new goals or take training out into the real world with the support of a professional dog trainer.
Did you know a lot of training is simply managing your dog's environment? A lot of bad habits our dogs pick up have to do with what is going on in our home, on walks and with us. Many dogs who have great manners and skills often suffer from behavior issues because their lives are stressful, their needs aren't met, or because they are being inadvertently rewarded for less than desirable behaviors. Ex. if your dog barks out the window all day at passersby, he is learning that when he barks the mailman leaves. On walks he may be very reactive, after building up all that negative emotional ammo in your home. Solution: block his view. This is one simple way to manage the environment, without training, to improve your dog's life and your relationship.
Having a dog with behavior challenges isn't easy! We understand! Maybe you adopted a dog envisioning lovely peaceful walks or how you would take them to the winery or to family gatherings. But that isn't the reality and that is disappointing at the very least.
Holistic Dog Training not only focuses on the dog and the dog's issues but also on the relationship you have with your dog and making sure your own needs are met so you can enjoy a mutually beneficial life. Part of the training plan will be to discuss how you as a pet parent are taking care of yourself. And follow-ups will be scheduled to continue to improve, learn and grow.
Pet Parent Support events are offered online and in the community so you can find others who understand your experiences.
